About Us

In 1995, Rabbi Chaim Mintz and Mrs. Naama Lerman established Horeini Torah Center for Jewish Women to answer a growing need in the Jewish community. Increasing numbers of adult women were becoming interested in learning about their Jewish heritage, yet there was no appropriate place for them to learn. Some needed basic information. Some had already embarked upon learning programs in Israel, but had no place to continue at home. And some, already observant for many years, wanted a more solid foundation of knowledge for their lives.

Horeini was conceived as the answer to all those needs. One of the great Torah leaders of our time, Rabbi Avraham Pam (of sainted memory), gave his enthusiastic endorsement to the project, and soon Horeini opened its doors. The Center was dedicated to the memory or Rabbi Yitzchok Kirzner (of sainted memory), whose life was dedicated to bringing Jews closer to their heritage. In his groundbreaking lectures and writings, Rabbi Kirzner conveyed the Torah’s concepts with a unique combination of clarity, focus and depth that inspired thousands of Jews. In that spirit, Horeini gears its classes toward intelligent, educated women who, despite limited Jewish backgrounds, want depth and substance in their learning.

Today, Horeini is fulfilling this mission with a wide array of courses, all taught by dynamic, top-notch teachers. But that is only one part of the mission. A full Jewish life is not just learning; it’s finding one’s place as a valued member of the Jewish community. Horeini is a “second family” to many women. Here they find new friends who are interested, as they are, in spiritual growth. They find teachers and advisors who take a personal interest in their lives, offering good advice and practical help wherever it’s needed.

The name “Horeini” comes from King David’s heartfelt plea in Psalms “Horeini Hashem darkechah,” which means “Guide me, G-d, and teach me your way.” The inner urge to find an upward spiritual path resides in every Jewish heart; for Jewish women in the New York area, Horeini is an invaluable guide on the journey.
